Gut Instinct – the link to Mental Health?

TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF MY HEALTHIER LIFE!
Instead of pouring my usual large mug of rich, dark coffee, I delved into the back of the larder cupboard and plucked out a caffeine-free Lemon & Ginger teabag and drenched it in freshly boiled water.
I grabbed a handful of peppery watercress from the fridge to start my daily digestion off, before sending the wholegrain Shredded Wheat bitesize tumbling into my cereal bowl. My body is wondering what's happened to its quota of homemade jam on lavishly buttered, white, "foam bread" toast!
What has brought about my new healthier attitude, you wonder? Well, last night, The Well-brahams Group hosted a talk by nutritional therapist, Rebecca Hancock. Rebecca discovered Nutritional Therapy through her own health issues and it has transformed the way she lives her life.
Just a few small changes to your diet and lifestyle can have a huge effect on your overall wellbeing! For example, the evidence is overwhelming that caffeine can exacerbate or cause anxiety. So that's my first change - lower my caffeine intake and see if my anxieties lower too!
Rebecca chatted about the benefits of having a healthy gut and how our gut health has a direct effect on our mental health. She told us about probiotics (live microbial food ingredients that are beneficial to health) and prebiotics (carbohydrates that the probiotics feed on). She also told us what foods we can find these "friendly" bacteria in.
While I'm eating an under-ripe banana (they contain prebiotics!), you can take a look at Rebecca's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/rebeccahancocknutrition
Thanks Rebecca, for such an informative - life changing talk!
